On May 15, 2025, former FBI Director James Comey Jr. posted a photograph of seashells he said he had found on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast. The seashells were arranged to read “86 47,” and the post was captioned “Cool shell formation on my beach walk.” Many have interpreted ‘86 47’ as a call for violence against President Donald Trump — the “47” referencing Trump as the nation’s 47th president, and with “86” commonly meaning to remove or get rid of something. It didn’t take long for federal officials to flag the post, launching an investigation that has drawn North Carolina into a criminal case that critics say test the boundaries between free speech and criminal conduct.
