The PitchCom electronic communication system, used in Major League Baseball, transmits pitch calls directly to pitchers and other defensive players via a receiver earpiece. It removes the need for traditional hand signals and is designed to prevent opposing teams from stealing signs. After North Carolina’s Diamond Heels had used the system for a year, pitching coach Bryant Gaines said he tired of hearing his pre-taped voice call up to 180 pitches each game. So he and UNC baseball head coach Scott Forbes started brainstorming possibilities for their PitchCom voice actor. And they dreamed big. Enter Roy Williams, UNC’s retired head basketball coach, who happens to be a major UNC baseball fan. Having Williams in the pitcher’s ear seems to be working. The Tar Heels are playing USC in the Super Regional for a chance to advance to the College World Series for the 13th time in program history.
