Enbridge Gas North Carolina has been surveying private land in Chatham County for a proposed 28-mile natural gas pipeline. Persida Montanez, spokesperson with Enbridge, told The N&O that the company needs the pipeline to meet growing residential and business demand in Chatham and Lee counties. But the surveyed landowners are uniting in opposition of the project. For 85-year-old Dorasue Christian, the pipeline threatens more than just her property. Christian, a widow, lives on 22.5 acres with her 66-year-old son, who has a disability. Her family has owned the property for generations, and today it’s filled with chickens, birds, a pond and wildlife that she says provide the quiet environment her son depends on. Christian has said she is running out of savings and had planned to sell parcels of her land to support her son, but she said if Enbridge constructs a pipeline through it, buyers will not want to purchase it, due to the liability. “I’ve never been arrested in my life. … I’ve never even had a parking ticket,” she told The N&O. “If Enbridge takes this land, they’re going to have to come over my dead body.” Hear from Christian in this video, and click the link in our bio to keep reading. ✍️Ava Menkes 📹Robert Willett
