After an unsuccessful push to restore it through a technical corrections bill, the office is now awaiting the official letter notifying it of its termination and expects to formally shut down within two months. Created under the Environmental Education Act of 1993 to centralize various programs and reduce redundancy, the office had survived defunding attempts before in 2011 and 2017. No charges have been filed yet, but police describe a chaotic confrontation between the bus driver who was taking the elementary school students home and some of their parents. The bus was driven by a substitute driver “who experienced difficulty navigating the route,” Sarah Stephens, the principal of Middle Creek Elementary School in Apex, said in a message sent to families Tuesday afternoon. He and Annie Lawson raised seven kids in a tenant farmer’s house with no running water and a fireplace for heat, where five boys slept in one windowless room no bigger than a closet and everybody took baths in a washtub. Growing up in the 1950s and ‘60s, Randy Hester witnessed all of this because his family owned the 200-acre farm where they worked, and he spent summers cropping tobacco alongside Shorty Lawson, who showed him everything from how to build a rabbit trap to how to gig bullfrogs. So about 10 years ago, long after Shorty Lawson died, long after his family scattered, Hester got the idea to save the falling-down house where they lived all those years — partly as a shrine to his friend but more as a living history of the tenant farmers who drove North Carolina’s economy, building cities like Durham and Wilson. Gabri posted a video on July 31 alleging her father had been denied food, water and his stroke medication for weeks before the stroke. Her video has roughly 6.3 million views across Instagram and TikTok as of Friday. Her family started a GoFundMe to cover Johnson’s legal and medical costs that had raised over $8,000 as of Friday. In the controlled commotion, undergraduate researcher Jaxson King squeezes the shark’s face. A clear gel oozes from the pits around its snout, while his mentor Alecia Septer scrapes it into a small plastic vial. These researchers from UNC-Chapel Hill are tagging along with the shark survey to uncover how this gel may be keeping sharks’ sensing organs mysteriously clean. The gel is notable for other reasons too, like how even after freezing or boiling, many of the microbes inside survive — a resilience Septer thinks could point toward future medical advances. Firefighters had to perform CPR on the baby, who had regained a pulse by the time he was taken to the hospital, according to search warrants. With different maps being circulated in the community, residents still don’t know, months later, whether the pipeline would cross their property, or whether wetlands, culturally significant land or farms they’ve spent decades caring for would be disturbed. Persida Montanez, spokesperson with Enbridge, told The N&O that the company needs the 28-mile pipeline to meet growing residential and business demand in Chatham and Lee counties. The company has surveyed about 200 landowners and says each has been assigned an agent to discuss routing and property concerns. But landowners along the pipeline’s proposed route feel like their private property is being stolen.
